Troy Regional has been recognized as one of only 529 hospitals nationwide—and one of just five in Alabama—to receive a 5-star rating for nurse communication, according to a recent report from Becker’s Hospital Review. The recognition is based on data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The results reflect patient feedback collected between October 2023 and September 2024 and were released on Aug. 6, 2025.
Developed by CMS in collaboration with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the HCAHPS Survey is a national, standardized survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care. The survey is sent to a random sample of patients continuously throughout the year, and CMS publicly reports the results after reviewing and analyzing the data.
The nurse communication score is based on how patients rated their nurses’ ability to explain things clearly, listen carefully and treat them with courtesy and respect.
“This rating comes as no surprise, as our team members consistently receive high praise for the compassion, respect and courtesy they show our patients as they provide quality care,” said Rick Smith, Troy Regional CEO. “At Troy Regional, we take care of our community—our friends, families and neighbors. That is one of the things that makes healthcare close to home at Troy Regional so special. Our team takes great pride in making every patient feel genuinely cared for.”
Amy Minor, chief clinical officer, said, “We are proud to have such an outstanding team of nurses at Troy Regional. They could work in larger facilities, but they choose to serve this community… and they serve it well!” This recognition adds to a growing list of honors for Troy Regional in 2025:
- Top 100 Rural and Community Hospital by the Chartis Center for Rural Health – the only Alabama hospital to receive this distinction. The designation is based on the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, a trusted measure of rural hospital performance across operations and financial metrics.
- 2025 Women’s Choice Award®(s) – including recognition in the categories of Emergency Care (top 1 percent of hospitals) and Small Hospitals for Comprehensive Care (top 3 percent of hospitals), based on patient experience scores from HCAHPS and other independent data sources.
- Additional 5-star CMS ratings earlier this year for cleanliness and quietness of the hospital environment.
